Aware of this, German politician Jürgen Hardt, of the Christian Democratic Union, has suggested an extreme measure to put pressure on US leader Donald Trump if he does not lower his demands regarding Greenland.
Jürgen Hardt has raised the possibility that Germany could withdraw from the competition, leaving the World Cup in a bad way. “Cancelling the tournament would only be considered as a last resort to make President Trump reconsider the issue of Greenland,” the politician told Bild newspaper.
The CDU member is optimistic about a change of course in the conflict: “We are confident that we will reach a common understanding on security within NATO with regard to Greenland.”
Germany, a giant with four World Cups
Germany is one of the most successful teams in World Cup history. The German men’s team can boast trophies from 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. The Italian national team also has four titles and only Brazil, with five, has more. The boycott suggested by politician Jürgen Hardt would be a blow for the 2026 World Cup organised by the United States, Mexico and Canada, which would be without one of the most successful teams.
Donald Trump insists on Greenland
US President Donald Trump does not seem to be giving up on his pretensions to control Greenland. The Republican maintains that it is a matter of national security for his country and insists on taking over the island.
