The family drama of Brian Hoyer, former New England Patriots QB

Former NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer is facing a deeply personal loss far removed from the football field. The longtime veteran revealed that his sister-in-law, Carissa Hoyer, died “suddenly and unexpectedly,” leaving behind his brother Brett and their four young daughters. The news shocked both the former New England Patriots signal-caller and many fans who have followed his 15-year career.

Hoyer shared the message on social media along with a photo of the family, opening up about the devastating impact of the tragedy.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. On February 13th, my little brother lost his wife Carissa suddenly and unexpectedly.

He explained that the loss instantly changed the lives of the children – Josie, Lainey, Ellie and Hattie – all under the age of 12.

“In an instant, he became a widowed father to four daughters under 12.”

The former quarterback asked the public for help and compassion during what he called an unimaginable time.

If you can find it in your heart to help us help him and his girls through this unimaginable season, we would be forever grateful… We can’t take away their pain, but together we can help carry the weight.

A fundraising page created by Brian and his brother Matthew described Carissa as being “suddenly called home to the Lord at the age of 36.” No cause of death was publicly disclosed.

Hoyer, from NFL journeyman to family first

While Hoyer built a reputation as one of the NFL’s most reliable backup quarterbacks, his latest message shows how quickly life’s priorities shift beyond football.

Over 15 seasons, Hoyer played for multiple teams across the league, including the Patriots, Steelers, Cardinals, Browns, Texans, Bears, 49ers, Colts and Raiders. He appeared in games for eight different franchises – one of the highest totals for a quarterback in league history – and earned a Super Bowl ring during the 2018 season when New England defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.

Despite his journeyman status, he carved out a respected career thanks to preparation, leadership and locker-room presence. After retiring from playing, Hoyer transitioned into media, joining a local Patriots broadcast team featuring former players and analysts.

Yet his recent statement revealed a different side – not as a professional athlete, but as a brother and uncle trying to support grieving children.

Your support can help ease their burden during this painful time. Please consider donating or sharing to show you care. Every bit helps.

The request resonated across the football community, where players and fans often rally around families during hardship. Moments like this highlight the human stories behind the sport – where wins, losses and statistics fade compared to real-life struggles.

For Hoyer, the focus now is simple: helping his family heal.

Football defined much of his public life, but in this moment, compassion – not competition – has become the priority.
