The Eagles acquire an elite backup for Jalen Hurts: Should Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs be worried?

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to expand their arsenal. The reigning Super Bowl champions gave the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the NFL another reason to worry by adding depth to their roster with the signing of veteran Sam Howell to back up Jalen Hurts.

Head coach Nick Sirianni and the Eagles front office have been working all offseason to provide security for Hurts, first releasing Dorian Thompson-Robinson to make room for Howell in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

Although the terms of Howell’s contract have not been disclosed, media reports indicate that Philadelphia received the fourth-year quarterback, along with a sixth-round draft pick in 2026. In return, the Vikings received a fifth-round pick in 2026 and a seventh-round pick in 2027.

The Eagles’ quarterback room

The preseason deal brings Howell into a quarterback room that is already causing concern around the NFL. The undisputed starter is Jalen Hurts, and for now, Tanner McKee appears to be the first backup. Howell would be third in line, with rookie Kyle McCord at fourth.

With McKee injured in a finger injury during the preseason, Howell brings invaluable experience as a backup to Hurts heading into Week 1 of the regular season, while also serving as a mentor to McCord. Although fans and analysts are still waiting for Sirianni’s decision on what Howell’s role on the team will be.

The Vikings, meanwhile, wasted no time filling Howell’s shoes by signing former Eagle Carson Wentz. The 10-year veteran will back up J.J. McCarthy, pushing Max Brosmer up to third on head coach Kevin O’Connell’s depth chart.

What’s next for the Eagles?

After finishing the preseason with a 2-1 record, the Eagles are already preparing for a tough start to the regular season. In Week 1, they will host the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field and then visit Arrowhead Stadium to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.

They will then host the Los Angeles Rams and host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing a grueling first month of competition that will test Sirianni, Hurts, and even Howell. But if they manage to survive the stretch, they will confirm their status as favorites to win Super Bowl LX.
