The driver involved in Anthony Joshua crash has been identified: Set to be charged with reckless driving

Anthony Joshua‘s driver is expected to be charged with reckless driving “within the next 48 hours,” police sources in Nigeria have revealed.

The Daily Mail has identified the boxer’s driver as Kayode Adeniyi, 47, a long-standing member of Joshua‘s logistics team in Nigeria.

Adeniyi was discharged from hospital in Lagos late on New Year’s Eve and questioned for several hours, giving police an official statement regarding the minutes leading up to the crash, which tragically killed two of Joshua‘s fellow travellers.

A police source is quoted as saying: “The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and was then taken to the state police headquarters for questioning. He is in a stable condition and was able to provide us with his version of events that led up to the crash, and we expect a charging decision within the next 48 hours, but the bank holiday may delay proceedings.

“It is possible he could be in court on Friday, but it depends how quickly the process moves, and it would be for reckless driving.”

A deadly collision

Adeniyi allegedly exceeded the 65mph speed limit on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when he lost control after a tyre burst while overtaking.

The Lexus, carrying Joshua, along with two of his training staff, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, then collided with a parked truck. The impact claimed the lives of both Ghami and Ayodele instantly, while Joshua and Adeniyi suffered only minor injuries.

Joshua was later released from hospital after treatment and visited the mortuary where the bodies of his friends were “being prepared for repatriation.”

Ghami had been Joshua’s sports and physical rehabilitation coach for more than a decade, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer. Both men were 36 years old.

The driver of the parked truck involved in the accident has since disappeared, and Nigerian police have launched an active manhunt. Meanwhile, the coffins carrying Ghami and Ayodele were flown out of Lagos early on New Year’s Day.
