The drama of the star rookie who left Caleb Williams without his best weapon in overtime

While the Chicago Bears fought valiantly in their divisional round loss to the Los Angeles Rams, they also suffered the departure of one of their most important offensive weapons, tight end Colston Loveland.

This past Sunday, January 18, 2026, the Chicago Bears mounted a late comeback to add drama to the closing moments against the Rams and force the game into overtime. However, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, the play that ultimately sidelined Loveland occurred.

The tight end made an 18-yard reception and, upon hitting the ground, suffered a concussion that forced him to be removed from the field, preventing him from returning for the remainder of the game.

The injury left Caleb Williams without his most reliable target at a crucial moment. At that point, Loveland had recorded four receptions for 56 yards. After the game, head coach Ben Johnson confirmed that his player had suffered a concussion and had entered the league’s concussion protocol as a result of the play.

Loveland became a key piece for the Chicago Bears

The 21 year old joined the Chicago Bears as the tenth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. His impact on the franchise was immediate, and his production clearly reflected his importance within the offensive system.

Loveland appeared in 16 games for the team from the Windy City, starting in eleven of them, and finished the season with 58 receptions for 713 yards and six touchdowns.

For the Bears, the road ended with the painful defeat suffered against the Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field. Even so, the overall outlook leaves encouraging signs heading into the 2026 season.

The work accomplished in his first year by Ben Johnson, revitalizing Caleb Williams and providing the team with a clear identity, will not be forgotten anytime soon. In fact, if the core of the roster remains intact, the Bears could very well repeat as NFC North leaders and return to the postseason to once again compete for a place in the next Super Bowl.

The roster is filled with young and talented players who, under Johnson’s leadership and guidance, should have little trouble replicating a season as successful as the one that concluded for them on Sunday, January 18.

The path has already been laid out. It is now a matter of strengthening a few key defensive positions and adding impactful offensive pieces who can continue to support Williams, allowing the Bears to remain competitive at the highest level.

Maintaining health, continuity, and discipline will be essential, but the foundation appears solid, and the organization believes the experience gained this season will translate into sharper execution, greater resilience, and more consistent results moving forward league-wide.
