The Dolphins’ locker room turns its back on Tyreek Hill, and Mike McDaniel supports the decision

In a move that speaks volumes about team dynamics, the Miami Dolphins have made a bold statement by excluding Tyreek Hill from their 2025 leadership group. Long celebrated as a captain, Hill will no longer don the armband, signaling a shift in locker-room culture under head coach Mike McDaniel.

The decision comes after public friction and leadership concerns that have dogged the organization all offseason.

McDaniel backs captaincy overhaul amidst tension

Hill’s omission reflects more than a tactical direction-it’s a direct response to a turbulent season finale and instability in the locker room. After stepping away from the Week 18 game and declaring, “I’m out,” Hill’s commitment came under intense scrutiny.

Along with being among the most fined players last year, he relinquished the leader mantle he had worn since joining the Dolphins.

Coach Mike McDaniel reinforced the change by officially appointing six new captains: quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, center Aaron Brewer, fullback Alec Ingold, linebacker Jordyn Brooks, defensive tackle Zach Sieler, and linebacker Bradley Chubb.

Hill’s absence on the list speaks volumes about the leadership path the team now values.

Meanwhile, Miami‘s internal pressures continue to mount. A Washington Post profile referred to the organization as a “ticking time bomb”, citing internal dysfunction, imbalances in roster construction, and waning player trust-all adding weight to McDaniel‘s decision and the overhaul of expectations.

For Hill, the message is clear: leadership must be earned and cannot depend on star power alone.

And for McDaniel, the optics and integrity of the team structure are priorities-whether the price tag involves shedding a franchise star or redefining what it means to lead in Miami.

In 2025, the Dolphins appear intent on resetting their identity- one captain at a time.
