The Dodgers want to snatch a 34-home-run slugger from the Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers will spend this offseason looking to reinforce their already strong roster by any means necessary. The only catch is that their goal of repeating as World Series champions for a third time requires them to get as close to perfection as possible.

With that in mind, Dave Roberts’ team has identified one particular need. Beyond the bullpen, the Dodgers outfield needs more depth, so they are exploring every available option.

The Dodgers have a Yankees player in their sights

It’s almost certain that Michael Conforto will not return, which opens up a spot they cannot afford to neglect in the outfield. Tommy Edman’s more natural position is second base in the infield, and among the organization’s prospects there is no one who can meet the highest standards in the outfield right now.

So they might consider pursuing one of the top MLB free agency names or exploring the trade market, with options such as Kyle Tucker (free agent), Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan (via trade), Cody Bellinger (free agent), and Boston Red Sox outfielders Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu.

Another name that stands out on this list is New York Yankees free agent Trent Grisham. A player coming off the best season of his career, in which he hit 34 home runs with 74 RBIs and an .811 OPS – plus the added bonus that he is only 29 years old.

Grisham may decline the Yankees’ one-year qualifying offer and look for a multi-year deal, especially since his defensive metrics were quite poor: he ranked in the 32nd percentile in sprint speed and range, and the 27th percentile in arm value.

On the other hand, the outfielder had never hit more than 17 home runs in a season before, and he is a career .218 hitter – yet he could still be one of the higher-profile targets for the Dodgers. We’ll have to wait and see whether they make a serious move for him or go after an even higher-caliber player.
