Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the most popular and important teams in MLB, will most likely start the 2026 season without the presence of the versatile American-born infielder and outfielder Tommy Edman.
Edman has had a difficult few seasons due to a persistent ankle injury that has kept him out of action for the Dodgers, and although he was expected to be fit to start the 2026 season, it looks like that will not be the case.
Tommy Edman remains injured and will miss Opening Day 2026
Tommy Edman’s health problems have been a constant inconvenience for the Dodgers. After dealing with a right ankle injury for the past two seasons, the player underwent a debridement process, a quick and effective method to remove large amounts of necrotic or infected tissue, in the search to solve the injury from which he had not been able to recover.
With the procedure already completed, recovery should be complete by Opening Day; however, the process has been slower than expected, which has put Edman in doubt according to a report by Katie Woo of The Athletic
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes had previously mentioned that Tommy would be limited at the start, but that he was not worried about his availability for the regular season. However, the reality is hitting the Dodgers and the possibility that Edman will not be ready for the first part of the season is becoming more and more likely, creating a significant problem for the team.
Tommy Edman: An Essential Player for the Dodgers?
Tommy Edman is known for his great speed and elite defense in MLB, being by many fans and people within the organization fundamental to the game of the Dodgers
His versatility in multiple positions, including second base and center field, makes him an invaluable player for the MLB champions. However, if he continues to be injured, the Los Angeles team will have to look for alternatives to cover his absence in the first games.
If Edman is unavailable, South Korea’s Kim Hye-seong, Cuba’s Andy Ibanez and Venezuela’s Miguel Rojas would be the ones to take on Edman’s responsibilities at second base, while Andy Pages would take on the role of center fielder.
