The Dodgers prepare the departure of a pitcher and are already thinking about having Ohtani in full swing

With the July 31 trade deadline looming, the Dodgers appear to be finalizing moves to their roster and all signs point to a possible departure of right-handed pitcher Dustin May. This rumor, which has gained momentum in recent days, suggests that May may have pitched his last game in the blue uniform, which would reconfigure the rotation just as the team looks to consolidate for the postseason.

Dustin May, known for his powerful pitches that approach 100 mph, has had an up-and-down season after returning from major elbow surgery. Despite a $2.135 million one-year contract, his 4.73 ERA in 17 starts and recent inconsistency leave him at the center of speculation. David Vassegh of AM 570 KLAC Dodgers Radio fanned the flames by commenting that he saw May taking pictures on the field with his wife after his last appearance against the Twins.

“I saw Dustin May after the game last night, taking pictures with his wife on the field. And, as you know, his name has come up in trade rumors. And it very well could have been the last time Dustin May pitched at Dodger Stadium wearing a Dodgers uniform, because the trade deadline will be July 31,” Vassegh said.

Ohtani to the Dodgers’ rescue

May’s potential departure is not the only concern for the Dodgers. The bullpen has been a constant headache, with the recent addition of Tanner Scott to the injured list with left elbow discomfort. Scott has 19 saves but also seven blown saves, tying the MLB record, with a worrisome 4.14 ERA. Although manager Dave Roberts downplayed the severity of Scott’s injury, bullpen depth remains a critical point.

Amid this restructuring, all eyes are on Shohei Ohtani. With the need to strengthen the rotation and bullpen, Ohtani’s ability as a pitcher and hitter becomes even more crucial. Recently, Roberts confirmed that Ohtani is on track to pitch four innings in his next outing, a vital step in his progression to take on a more extensive role in the rotation.

A race against time

May’s contract situation and the urgency to strengthen the bullpen before July 31 puts the Dodgers at a crossroads. The question will be whether to keep the player or make a sale that could provide new opportunities.

General manager Brandon Gomes has indicated that while Scott’s injury has not drastically altered their plans, the need for additional help is evident. Time is ticking and the decision the Dodgers make in the coming days will be critical to their title hopes down the stretch.
