The Dodgers continue to ruin baseball and have just “bought” a new World Series with the arrival of Edwin Díaz

While some experts keep complaining about the Dodgers‘ massive spending, one thing is crystal clear: they have zero intention of stopping. If throwing money at the problem helps them win championships, they’ll keep writing checks.

Dodgers land the top closer available: Edwin Díaz

The back-to-back World Series champions have signed Edwin Díaz – widely regarded as the best closer in baseball – to a 3-year, $69 million deal. Díaz opted out of the final two years of his Mets contract last month and chose the Dodgers over a reported 3-year, $66M offer to stay in New York.

Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci weighed in on the blockbuster move:

“Money doesn’t buy championships, but it sure helps you get out of mistakes. After dropping $72 million on closer Tanner Scott in January – a move that has yet to pay dividends – the Dodgers pivoted to the best closer in baseball, Edwin Díaz, at $69 million. Scott, signed to a four-year deal with deferred money, posted a 4.74 ERA and missed the final three postseason rounds on the IL.”

He continued:

“Last offseason the Dodgers spent $107 million on free-agent relievers Scott, Blake Treinen, and Kirby Yates, only to scramble in October and convert rookie Roki Sasaki into their closer. They won the last two World Series with starters coming out of the bullpen (Walker Buehler and Yoshinobu Yamamoto). Adding Díaz ends the days of improvising an endgame are over.”

The bullpen was arguably the Dodgers‘ biggest weakness in 2025. Tanner Scott flopped and was injured for the most critical stretch, forcing them to rely on the 21-year-old Sasaki as closer in the playoffs.

Now, with Edwin Díaz slamming the door, the Dodgers have erased that flaw and made an already stacked roster even more terrifying.

Good luck trying to beat them without spending big – and spending smart – in today’s MLB.
