Good news for Jake Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) after his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, which he won by unanimous decision. The American fighter is much closer to his dream of being a world champion once he has entered the cruiserweight list of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
The YouTuber is therefore now officially eligible for a world title fight. The organization chaired by Gilberto Jesus Mendoza would allow him to fight the current cruiserweight ‘super champion’, Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, who on the same evening as Paul defeated Yuniel Dorticos. With no interim champion in the WBA in this weight class right now, this fight could fit.
After defeating Chavez Jr., ‘El Gallo’ Paul, as if he were a boxing reference or the champion, even stated: “I want tougher fighters. I want to be world champion. The ‘Zurdo’ looked slow tonight. That fight would be easy too”.
As is well known, the former Disney star shoots in all directions – and categories – and not only spoke of Ramirez after his last fight. “I want to fight Anthony Joshua because I know I’m going to beat him up. Promoter Eddie Hearn responded to the fighter, explaining: “It would be catastrophic, it would be his end”. “It shouldn’t happen. They are clever with the opponents they choose.” However, the Briton did not close the door to his fighter wanting to do it.
In any case, if JP wants to go for a world title it would have to be fighting against Gilberto Ramirez. Questions arise such as: Is he worthy of being ranked 14th by the WBA or is it a possible financial move? Would it be unfair to other fighters that he has a world title shot? Is he ready for a championship belt fight? The fight against Chavez was poor overall because the latter didn’t do much, so we still don’t know how far the American’s boxing would go against a top level opponent. He threw good and powerful combinations, but as always against a contender with an asterisk.
Paul’s only defeat came in 2023 against Tommy Fury, his toughest opponent to date, and it was not a good one. It was an eight-round cruiserweight bout. Ryan Bourland and Andre August were other boxing opponents, whom he knocked out without any problems.
