The Cowboys turn their backs on Joe Milton and don’t even guarantee him a spot as Dak Prescott’s backup

The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback depth chart has been a topic of interest this offseason, especially with the acquisition of Joe Milton III from the New England Patriots.

Milton, a former sixth-round pick, was expected to step into the backup role behind Dak Prescott after Cooper Rush’s departure. However, early indications suggest that the team remains uncertain about his readiness for the position.

In the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, Milton showcased both promise and areas needing improvement. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Additionally, he rushed five times for 22 yards. While these statistics highlight his potential, they also underscore the need for further development.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of continued evaluation, stating, “Why do we have to decide that today? We don’t have to decide that today… It’s more of me having to learn Joe.” This cautious approach reflects the team’s desire to thoroughly assess Milton’s capabilities before committing to a backup role.

The Competition: Will Grier’s role

Veteran quarterback Will Grier, who has primarily served in a reserve capacity during his NFL career, is also vying for the backup position. His experience and familiarity with the league could provide a stabilizing presence behind Prescott.

The competition between Milton and Grier will likely intensify as the preseason progresses, with both quarterbacks aiming to prove their worth.

The Cowboys’ coaching staff is taking a measured approach, allowing both quarterbacks to showcase their skills and determine who is best suited to support Prescott during the regular season.

As the preseason continues, all eyes will be on Joe Milton III and Will Grier as they battle for the coveted backup quarterback spot. Milton’s raw talent and athleticism are evident, but his consistency and decision-making will be crucial factors in the team’s evaluation process.

The upcoming games will provide further insight into whether Milton can secure the backup role or if Will Grier will emerge as the preferred option.

While Joe Milton III has shown flashes of potential, the Dallas Cowboys are exercising caution in naming him the backup quarterback. The ongoing competition with Will Grier will play a significant role in shaping the team’s quarterback depth chart for the 2025 season.
