The Chiefs still own the NFL and the numbers prove it despite 5-5 record

Not many saw what was coming for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 season. Less than a year after making the Super Bowl, Andy Reid‘s team is 5-5 and on the outside looking in in the AFC playoff picture. Despite Patrick Mahomes playing at a high level, Travis Kelce rounding into form and the defense performing relatively well, the ball simply hasn’t bounced Kansas City’s way this season.

As things stand, the Chiefs are in 9th place in the AFC. They have an uphill battle to rack up wins and grab a playoff spot once again, especially since their next few games aren’t exactly easy. Yet despite their down season, they are still dominating the national conversation, even for casual fans. And the viewership numbers are backing that sentiment up.

Kansas City Chiefs have everyone watching their games no matter their record

The NFL shared stunning viewership numbers for the 2025 season to this point, claiming that it’s been the most popular season over the past decade. In their list of the Top 5 games with most viewers, four Chiefs games pop up.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the only other team to appear twice in the Top 5. Their game against the Dallas Cowboys, which was the first contest of the regular season, ranked fourth on the list. It’s somewhat incredible that the Chiefs had three games with more viewers than the Opening Kickoff game; especially considering that one featured one of the top rivalries in the NFL.

None of this should be all that surprising considering how much fanfare the Chiefs have garnered since they began winning, plus the Taylor Swift bump. Both fans wanting to see them win and haters wanting to see the Chiefs lose combine to make them the most important team in the league from a viewership and entertainment standpoint. The gap among other teams only seems to be growing, too, despite their season not going as planned in the win-loss column.
