The Chiefs start rebuilding: Andy Reid aims to eliminate future mistakes

January feels different in Kansas City. For years, postseason football has been part of the city’s winter rhythm. This season, that sound is gone. The Kansas City Chiefs are officially out of the playoff picture, and while the season is not yet finished, the organization has already turned inward.

The final week arrives without the usual calculations or scenarios. Instead, it brings reflection. Inside the building, the mood is competitive but contemplative. This is unfamiliar territory, especially in the era defined by Patrick Mahomes, where January football had become routine rather than a reward.

Still, there is no sense of disengagement. The Chiefs’ finale against the Las Vegas Raiders carries its own gravity. Rivalry games do not allow for emotional shortcuts, regardless of records or standings. That intensity, according to head coach Andy Reid, is non-negotiable.

Reid has been clear about what comes next. Once the season ends, Kansas City will complete a full self-scout and move quickly into personnel evaluation. Problems will not be glossed over. They will be addressed directly. The goal is correction, not comfort.

You don’t like hitting right now, obviously. But that’s what it is. Then you’ve got to go back and fix things, make sure they’re right

A rare pause forces hard questions for Andy Reid and the Chiefs

This offseason marks a first. For the first time since Mahomes became the starter, the Chiefs will watch the playoffs from home. ESPN analysts have already pointed out how rare this interruption is for one of the league’s most stable contenders. That alone raises difficult but necessary questions.

Sunday’s opponent ensures the standard does not drop. Quarterback Chris Oladokun dismissed any notion that the Raiders would play cautiously, praising their defensive effort and leadership under Patrick Graham. In rivalry games, effort is never optional.

Linebacker Nick Bolton framed the moment with perspective rather than frustration. Opportunities in the NFL can disappear quickly, and every snap still matters.

For Kansas City, this is not about tearing everything down. It is about identifying what slipped and making sure it does not happen again. The postseason absence has created discomfort, and Reid wants it that way.

There is plenty to work on … What we do is work at the problems and make sure we fix them.

Andy Reid

The rebuild has already started, quietly and deliberately. The Chiefs are not chasing a feeling. They are chasing answers.
