The Chiefs speak openly about Patrick Mahomes’ recovery

Patrick Mahomes is fully immersed in the rehabilitation process after suffering tears to his ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

With their quarterback sidelined for the past two games, the Kansas City Chiefs have pivoted decisively toward a long-range outlook, signaling there will be no shortcuts or accelerated timelines in his recovery.

The void left by the franchise star has been noticeable around Arrowhead Stadium, but behind closed doors the organization has maintained a measured, composed approach. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spoke this week about Mahomes‘ status and made it clear that patience will guide every decision.

“I’d never want to put a hard timeline on him, but I know him extremely well,” Nagy said. “I know how he’s wired, and I feel very confident about where he’s at right now and where he’s headed.”

Inside the organization, there is cautious optimism that Mahomes could be available around the beginning of the 2026 season in early September. Still, that window is viewed more as a hopeful benchmark than a promise. The message has been consistent: progress in rehab, not the calendar, will dictate what comes next.

Head coach Andy Reid echoed that sentiment Monday, offering a glimpse into how Mahomes has attacked the early stages of his recovery.

“He’s around the building and putting in the work,” Reid said.

“He’s spending a lot of time rehabbing and really going after it. He’s still seeing the guys, but most of his focus is on getting healthy.”

Chiefs set firm boundaries heading into Week 18

That cautious philosophy has already influenced Kansas City‘s immediate plans. When the Chiefs wrap up the regular season against the Las Vegas Raiders, Mahomes will not make the trip and will not be present on the sideline. Reid addressed the decision directly.

“Not this early, no,” Reid said.

The move underscores the organization’s broader mindset. There is little benefit in exposing Mahomes to unnecessary travel or distractions while his priority remains rehabilitation. Every choice is being evaluated through the same filter: safeguard the quarterback and protect his long-term future.

Even so, Mahomes has not distanced himself from the team. He continues to spend time at the facility, maintaining connections with teammates while directing the bulk of his effort toward the rehab work that will define the next chapter of his career.
