The Chiefs pressuring NFL to leave United States and play at the Bernabeu in 2026

The possibility of the Kansas City Chiefs playing under the lights in Madrid is quickly turning from speculation into a serious storyline, as one of the NFL‘s premier franchises openly pushes for a place in the league’s next international showcase.

With the Atlanta Falcons already confirmed to play at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in 2026, the only missing piece is their opponent. Kansas City has made it clear it wants that role.

Team president Mark Donovan has been unusually direct about the franchise’s intentions, highlighting just how important the opportunity is for a team that has increasingly embraced the global stage.

“We’ve been very open and aggressive with the league… that we want to play in Spain this year,” Donovan told The Kansas City Star. “We think it would be a great market, game and matchup… it’s perfect timing for us.”

The timing, in many ways, reflects a broader shift in how the Chiefs view their identity, not just as perennial contenders, but as one of the NFL‘s most marketable international brands.

Kansas City‘s push for Madrid is not happening in isolation. The franchise has steadily expanded its international footprint, including securing marketing rights in Spain through the league’s Global Markets Program.

That initiative has placed the Chiefs alongside teams like the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins in building year round engagement with overseas fans. A game at the Bernabeu, home of Real Madrid, would represent the most visible step yet in that strategy.

The organization is no stranger to playing abroad. During the Patrick Mahomes era, Kansas City has appeared in London, Mexico City, Germany and Brazil, often drawing strong international crowds. Each trip has reinforced the Chiefs‘ growing appeal beyond the United States.

Donovan has previously described the team’s ambition to become the “world’s team,” and a Madrid appearance would align perfectly with that vision.

Mahomes factor adds intrigue to scheduling decision

Yet, for all the momentum behind Kansas City‘s push, one key variable remains: Mahomes‘ health.

The star quarterback is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL suffered late in the 2025 season, and while his rehabilitation is progressing, there is still uncertainty around his readiness for the start of 2026.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt acknowledged that uncertainty when discussing the upcoming season, suggesting the team may not be in position for a high profile opener.

“I don’t think that’s on the table anymore for us to be in Seattle,” Hunt said, pointing to concerns about rushing Mahomes back too early.

Ironically, that timeline could strengthen Kansas City‘s case for Madrid. With the Spain game expected to fall later in the season, it would give Mahomes more time to return at full strength, ensuring the league can still showcase one of its biggest stars on an international stage.

A balancing act for the NFL

For the NFL, the decision is far from straightforward. The Chiefs are one of the league’s biggest television draws, regularly featured in marquee slots such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Moving them to a mid season international window could reshape those broadcast plans. But placing Kansas City in Madrid would also maximize global exposure at a time when the league is aggressively expanding its presence in Europe.

The Falcons‘ opponent will not be confirmed until the full schedule release in May, but the Chiefs have made their intentions unmistakably clear.

Whether the league ultimately grants that request will depend on a mix of logistics, health timelines and commercial strategy. But one thing is certain, Kansas City is not waiting quietly for the decision.
