The Chiefs’ master plan to cover the gaps threatening their empire

The 2025 season was a complete disaster for the Kansas City Chiefs. Many things went wrong for a franchise that had established itself as the most successful team of the past decade. Injuries, penalties involving several players and a terrible start to the campaign ended up burying their postseason aspirations.

However, the organization has no intention of dwelling on what was lost during the previous season. Instead, the Chiefs are working intensely to rebuild the roster as they prepare for another journey in which they hope to return to the Super Bowl.

On Monday, March 16, 2026, it was announced that Kansas City was signing quarterback Justin Fields. Despite not having much luck on his side and receiving less-than-stellar reviews for his previous work with the Chicago Bears, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets, there was clearly something about him that caught the attention of head coach Andy Reid.

This moment represents a key opportunity for the team to rise again and reclaim the level that once defined its dominance in the AFC West. For now, the organization is focused on recovering its greatest leader and best player, Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a torn ACL during a game against the Denver Broncos.

That injury proved devastating not only for the quarterback but also for the team’s season. In that same game, the Chiefs’ hopes of reaching the playoffs effectively came to an end. Because of that painful conclusion, the franchise is now preparing carefully for what lies ahead in the 2026 NFL Draft.

What Kansas City must target in the draft

Several NFL analysts have already begun evaluating what the Chiefs need in order to strengthen the roster with young talent coming from the college ranks. One of those voices is NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, who shared his thoughts during the Monday, March 16, 2026 edition of the program Get Up.

The Chiefs sense the urgency with this draft. … They weren’t huge players in free agency because they wanted to acquire more picks with the Trent McDuffie trade.”… “Got two first-round picks. They could package those to even move back.

It’s not considered an overly deep draft at the top. They’re going to try to rebuild that defense, especially the secondary. They’ve lost a lot of pieces on that back end, so expect them to get some cornerback help. They know they’re good at drafting corners. They also need some help on that defensive line to help Chris Jones.

The Chiefs clearly understand that strengthening the defense will be essential if they want to return to championship contention. Rebuilding the secondary and adding reinforcements to the defensive line are among the priorities that could define their draft strategy.

It is also worth remembering that during this offseason, the team added the reigning Super Bowl LX MVP, running back Kenneth Walker III. In addition, star tight end Travis Kelce has already confirmed that he will return for another season to play alongside his longtime friend and teammate, Patrick Mahomes.

With those moves and the upcoming draft decisions, Kansas City hopes to rebuild the foundation of a roster capable of competing once again at the highest level in the NFL.
