The Canelo Alvarez era is over, here comes David Benavidez

Canelo Alvarez has been criticized in recent years for not facing David Benavidez, who was the mandatory challenger for the WBC Super Middleweight title before moving up in weight.

Then came his defeat against Terence Crawford, a fighter several divisions below the Mexican, and the criticism intensified about his legacy in boxing.

Benavidez to take Saul Alvarez’s place

Some of Saul Alvarez’s main detractors have been David Benavidez (31-0) and his team, as they were not accepted to face him despite trying for years and now the father of the Mexican Monster is back in action.

“I think Canelo’s era is over, I think it’s over and we’ve slowly been seeing it. I think all fighters come to an end and as I say, Canelo has had many wars, many fights, he has prepared in many fights and the fighters are finished in the gym, not in the fights, and he has been a very disciplined person, a person who has always taken things seriously and I think he has always trained very hard. I think his body is no longer responding to him, we have seen it little by little.

The Canelo era is over and the era of the Mexican Monster, David Benavidez, is coming.

José Benavidez Sr.

“Unfortunately for Canelo, the reflexes are no longer there, the legs are not there, the body is not responding,” said Jose Benavidez to Izquierdazo. “I think he’s finished in so many big fights and he’s finished in the gym and we’ve already seen it. So, the doors are open for him to want to take those dates and we are already signed up there, we are going to go all out and we have to show people that those dates belong to us.”

When is David Benavidez’s next fight?

  • Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026
  • Opponent: Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (48-1)
  • Championships at stake: WBO and WBA Cruiserweight titles
  • Venue:T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
