The baseball world reacts to Clayton Kershaw’s retirement

Once Clayton Kershaw announced his retirement from Major League Baseball, the baseball world reacted on social media, lamenting the departure of the Dodgers pitcher while at the same time remembering the iconic career he has carved out over the years. It was on Thursday, September 18, when the announcement was made official that he would be leaving at the end of the current campaign.

This has been a momentous announcement. For the past 18 years, Kershaw has been a mainstay for the Dodgers. He has spent his entire career with one team, something very unusual nowadays. He has an impressive 2.54 ERA in 452 regular season appearances in Major League Baseball. A legendary figure and potentially the best pitcher of his generation.

Dodgers owner Mark Walter says goodbye to Clayton Kershaw

The Dodgers released a statement on social media announcing Kershaw’s decision. Kershaw helped the team to two World Series titles (2020 and 2024) and was a Cy Young Award winner. In recent years, there were many questions about whether the left-handed legend would retire.

“On behalf of the Dodgers, I congratulate Clayton on his fabulous career and thank him for the many moments he provided to Dodgers and baseball fans around the world, as well as his deep charitable work,” Dodgers owner Mark Walter said in a statement. “His is a truly legendary career.”

Clayton Kershaw hangs up his boots with an MVP and three Cy Young Awards

Kershaw has won an MVP and three National League Cy Young Awards in a career that will undoubtedly culminate in the Hall of Fame, as well as participating in 11 All-Star Games, accumulating 222 wins and a 2.54 ERA. Earlier this year, he became the 20th pitcher in baseball history to reach 3,000 strikeouts.

After Kershaw starts against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, his role will be unclear. The Dodgers will enter the postseason with six capable starters, so it is very unlikely that Kershaw will start again. “I feel like there’s a place for him on our postseason roster,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
