The 2026 World Cup in numbers for Mexico: number of visitors, spectators, revenue and profits for citizens

The 2026 World Cup is warming up and Mexico continues to promote the event as co-host along with the United States and Canada. It will be a historic event in which the best national teams and the best soccer players on the planet will be present. Thirteen matches will bring significant revenue to the country and a great opportunity for tourists to get to know all corners of the nation, its customs, monuments and, of course, its gastronomy.

Josefina Rodriguez Zamora, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, led the country’s representation at the Tourism and Investment Forum in Madrid, in an event organized by BBVA. “Mexico is hosting a World Cup for the third time, and Mexico City for the fourth time. We forget that in 1971 we also had the Women’s World Cup, it is important to say,” she recalled.

“There is an estimate of more than 5 million travelers to watch the matches, but that is not the big challenge. The challenge is that these more than 5 million visitors will travel throughout the country, that if you arrive at a venue you will want to visit Oaxaca, that you will want to return to Merida, Los Cabos, Colima, Chiapas… that you will want to know the whole of Mexico. That is why we have 32 states within the World Cup party, not just three venues, we are 32. We have 13 matches and, most importantly, connection with all the cities that will be World Cup venues in the United States and Canada. And we have the most beautiful thing, a country that awaits them with open arms,” he said proudly.

Estimates for the World Cup are very positive

“The numbers we have for the World Cup are 48% more spending, 44% more tourists, job creation, it is estimated that 49% will go to hotels and restaurants in spending. I want to invite you to get to know our country, to invest in our country. We have all the tools, but above all we have today a great work and synergy with state governments, the federal government and municipalities. Thank you very much to all,” concluded Rodriguez Zamora.

BBVA has organized this Tourism and Investment Forum in Madrid, at the Palacio del Marques de Salamanca, in which the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) and the state governors of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Quintana Roo are participating, to highlight in front of more than 300 businessmen, the country’s wealth as a suitable destination for investment and what it means in economic terms the World Cup, which will start on June 11.

Jaime Saenz de Tejada, BBVA’s global head of Corporate and Institutional Banking, also spoke at the event, highlighting the drive of BBVA, Mexico’s leading bank, in terms of investment and the transformation of the country’s tourism businesses.
