“That’s all that matters”: LeBron James defends his legacy and his loyal fans

LeBron James has been in the eye of the storm at the start of this season due to his sciatica injury and, now, his performance. Surprisingly, at 41, the NBA star is playing his 23rd season and continues to perform at a high level.

He was the top scorer in Tuesday’s 141-116 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, tallying 31 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds, and yet he still has detractors, but he showed that he is focused on his fans.

LeBron ignores his haters and sends a message to his fans

The victory in the game against the Hawks at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles ended their three-game losing streak and raised the Lakers’ record to 24-14. And King James was largely responsible for that.

With 31 points at 41 years old, he was the game’s leading scorer. Together with Luka Doncic, who had 27 points, 12 assists, and 5 rebounds, they led the Lakers to a long-awaited victory. In addition, the team’s five starters scored in double digits, awaiting the return of Austin Reaves.

However, LBJ is in the final year of his contract with the team, so his continuity not only in the league but also with the Lakers is uncertain, and many fans are doubting and speculating about his retirement.

After the game, LeBron was asked if he was bothered by the constant questioning, which has intensified now that the end of his career seems to be drawing ever closer. However, James reflected:

“I just hope that once I’m done that I made an impact for the people that follow my career and watch me, my fans that’s been locked down with me for over 23 years since I kinda started this journey as a high school freshman,” he said. “That’s all that matters: My crew that’s been with me and everything else doesn’t matter.”

Demonstrating even more wisdom, when asked about his motivation and passion to continue playing (and performing) after 23 years in the league, which is equivalent to just over half his life, LBJ explained:

“I would never disrespect the basketball gods when it comes to playing this game. So I put the time and the effort and the commitment in – mentally, physically, spiritually – you know, every time I hit the floor… trying to set the example for my teammates and the younger generation that’s watching me,” added the 4-time NBA champion.

He currently averages 22.4 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Now, LeBron and the Lakers will return to action on Thursday, January 15, once again at Crypto.com Arena to face the Charlotte Hornets.
