Terrible trade for the Wizards: Anthony Davis will be out for the rest of the season

Anthony Davis’ arrival in the nation’s capital appears to have marked the final chapter of his time on the court for this season. Following his high-profile trade from the Dallas Mavericks, multiple reports indicate that the star center “is expected to miss the remainder of the season while recovering from hand and groin injuries,” according to insider Chris Haynes.

The news is not entirely surprising. Davis has been sidelined since January 10 due to a “ligament injury in his left hand.”

That issue, combined with a lingering groin problem, limited his participation to just 20 games this year in Dallas. Although Washington head coach Brian Keefe was cautious on Saturday when asked about reports of Davis being shut down for the season-responding, “I can’t confirm that, no”-the team’s reality appears to be pointing in a different direction.

Anthony Davis’ numbers this season

Despite his physical ordeal, Davis showed that when healthy, he remains a dominant force in the paint. In his brief appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, he posted star-level numbers that are now on hold until his recovery:

  • Points per game: 20.4
  • Rebounds per game: 11.1
  • Blocks per game: 1.7
  • Assists per game: 2.8
  • Minutes per game: 31.3

Uncertainty and a plan for the future

The Wizards’ strategy is clear: maximize their draft position to retain their first-round pick. With the arrivals of Trae Young and Davis-both currently sidelined by injury-the franchise is betting on an aggressive rebuild for next season.

Still, Davis has made no secret of his competitive desire. “I want to see the plan, hear the plan, see the vision… I want to have those conversations with them and see what happens,” he told The Athletic in January.

Davis was emphatic about his priorities in that interview, stressing that his mindset is not about being on the floor just to participate, but about pursuing another championship: “At this point in my career, I want to compete for a championship. Whether it’s here or somewhere else, I have no idea.”

For now, Washington will focus on rehabilitating its new star while securing its place near the bottom of the standings, where it currently sits ahead of only the Indiana Pacers.
