Terence Crawford’s team makes a claim that hurts Canelo Alvarez

On September 13, 2025, Mexican fighter Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez lost by unanimous decision to Terence Crawford at the Allegian Stadium in Las Vegas. The defeat was resounding and the fighter had to hand over his four super middleweight belts, while the American managed to write his name in boxing history by becoming the first boxer to be undisputed champion in three different divisions.

Although the fight ended in a judges’ decision, the words of Terence Crawford’s assistant trainer, Bernie Davis, caused a stir. Speaking to MillCity Boxing, he claimed that ‘Bud’ “beat him worse than Mayweather”, comparing the 2025 performance to Canelo’s historic defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.

Terence Crawford’s trainer says they beat Canelo Alvarez “worse than Mayweather”

Bernie Davis’ comment did not go unnoticed, as in the eyes of the champion’s assistant, Crawford outperformed Canelo in a more forceful way than in that 2013 when Floyd defeated the then 23-year-old Mexican

We beat him up. We beat him worse than Mayweather, and we’re talking about the refined version

The trainer even claimed that Canelo “looked old, weathered and tired,” a far cry from the boxer who defeated Gennadiy Golovkin and although the judges scored close cards of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112, Davis insisted that Bud “stunned him and made him stagger” during the fight.

However, the statistics paint a different picture with Canelo, who landed 29.3% of his punches, while Crawford was 21.5% accurate with 45 jabs and 70 power punches, although he had better mobility and defense, so some experts in the sport consider it exaggerated to talk about a “beating”.

The difference between Canelo Alvarez’s defeats to Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford

The comparison with Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been inevitable; in 2013 the then-undefeated American defeated a young and dominant Canelo by majority decision, demonstrating a lesson in pure technique and making it clear that experience and tactical intelligence could neutralize the Mexican.

But the 2025 version was different, as Crawford, at 33 years of age and moving up two weight classes, managed to baffle Canelo with lateral movement and an evasive style that allowed him to neutralize his power and although it did not end in a KO, the American’s strategy was enough to dethrone the undisputed champion and make history.

With a record of 63 wins, three losses and two draws, Canelo remains one of the most profitable figures in boxing. Meanwhile, Terence Crawford, an undisputed champion in three different categories and with an undefeated record of 42-0 (31 KOs), has established himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.
