Terence Crawford’s direct replacement in boxing revealed by Roy Jones Jr.

While many fans want to keep watching “Bud” in the boxing ring, Terence Crawford has left the sport with his head held high. A dominant win over Canelo Alvarez, which made him a three-weight undisputed world champion, was the final thing Crawford felt he needed to do in the sport. He had nothing left to prove.

Despite talks of a rematch with Alvarez, Crawford didn’t feel it was necessary to continue cementing his legacy. Bud wasn’t alone in that thought process either. Former world champion Roy Jones Jr. also didn’t believe Crawford should take the rematch. When asked if he wanted to see that rematch, Jones gave a convincing “not really“. Jones did want to see Bud go down in weight to 160 and win a title there.

Crawford didn’t take that advice, and he didn’t choose to go back to 154 either. The latter might be because of Jaron “Boots” Ennis. Ennis is the new kid on the block at 154 pounds. Having dominated at 147 and capturing the WBA and IBF welterweight belts, Boots decided to move up in late 2025, debuting at super welterweight with a first round TKO of Uisma Lima. Crawford only dabbled at 154, defeating Israil Madrimov in August of 2024.

Roy Jones Jr. says Boots Ennis “is the truth”

Jones recently spoke about Ennis and admits he’s the future of the sport at super welterweight and possibly beyond.

A lot of people are underestimating Boots Ennis. Boots Ennis is not what they think he is. Boots Ennis is the truth, you understand me? They all talk crazy about Boots, but Boots ain’t nothing but the truth.

Ennis, at 28 years old, is unbeaten with a 36-0 record – with one bout, against Chris van Heerden, ruled a No Contest. Boots has had some trouble actually finding high-level opponents to challenge him. That’s what sparked a move-up in weight in 2025. He’s off to a great start at 154, and the sky is the limit for Boots.
