Terence Crawford, one of boxing’s biggest names, has announced that he will not fight until after May 2025 due to a health issue.
Crawford, who recently made history by becoming a four-weight world champion after moving up to 154lbs and defeating Israil Madrimov in a tight points decision in August, is now facing a period of recovery. Despite the delay, Crawford remains hopeful that a mega-fight with Canelo Alvarez is still in his future.
Crawford’s primary target is a showdown with Canelo Alvarez, the unified 168lb champion. However, for that fight to happen, Crawford would need to gain 14lbs, as Alvarez is unlikely to drop weight for a middle-ground bout. Despite the size difference, Crawford sees this fight as the defining moment of his career.
Saudi boxing chief, Turki Alalshikh, who has organized major boxing events in the region, has shown interest in making the fight happen in Saudi Arabia. Alalshikh, who previously struggled to make progress with Alvarez’s team, is now optimistic about the possibility.
“Crawford has a small health issue but prefers to fight with us after May. If Canelo is hearing me, we are ready to discuss the fight,” Alalshikh declared in an interview with talkSPORT.
Would Canelo fight Crawford?
While Canelo has yet to announce his next opponent, several options are on the table, including undefeated challenger Christian Mbilli and a surprise matchup with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Crawford, meanwhile, has the opportunity to unify the 154lbs division before facing Alvarez. The WBO has ordered him to fight Sebastien Fundora, but with his injury, it remains unclear whether Crawford will pursue that fight.
In a potential bout against Alvarez, Crawford would be considered the underdog due to the significant weight and size difference.
However, boxing expert Teddy Atlas is confident in Crawford’s ability to succeed.
“Until somebody knocks the king off of his throne, I ain’t going against the guy,” Atlas said, praising Crawford’s tenacity, body punching, and power.
“I think he’s got those special traits.”
As Crawford takes time to recover, boxing fans eagerly await news of his return to the ring and the potential for a historic clash with Canelo Alvarez in the near future.
