What began as a historic celebration for Terence Crawford ended with an unexpected twist that grabbed the headlines. Just hours after his triumphant return to Omaha, where he was honored for his victory over Canelo Alvarez, the world champion was detained by local police while celebrating his 38th birthday.
Images of the arrest quickly circulated on social media where Crawford was seen with his hands up, he was handcuffed while one of the occupants of the vehicle said “I’m not going to pull a gun”. According to the police report, the officer allegedly observed a weapon inside the car, which prompted the action. Later, it was confirmed that the weapon belonged to a member of the boxer’s security team and had the corresponding legal permit.
Omaha Mayor John Ewing lamented the incident: “My heart sank to hear of this ending to a wonderful day and night honoring our city’s world boxing champion”.
Is Terence Crawford retiring? The message that clarifies his boxing future
Despite rumors that he might retire after categorically defeating Canelo, Crawford used his Instagram account to make it clear that he plans to hang up his gloves:
They say 38 years old is old, but I tell them I’m aging like fine wine. Chapter 38 is underway
Dressed in a relaxed look and a cap with the name “Omaha”, the fighter shared images of his birthday and showed that beyond the altercation with the police, his focus remains firmly on his career. At this stage, with undisputed titles in three different divisions, Terence has nothing to prove, but still has much to offer.
Canelo, Topuria and an open future for Terence Crawford in boxing
While Canelo Alvarez has publicly called for a rematch, the dominance shown by Crawford in the ring has left little doubt about the outcome of a second fight. In parallel, the American has also been involved in a tense confrontation with UFC champion Ilia Topuria, which has fueled rumors of a possible fight.
A hypothetical fight between Topuria and Crawford could be a commercial success, although nothing is confirmed at the moment. What is clear is that the Omaha boxer still has multiple high-profile options to maintain his legacy in the elite of the sport.
