Taylor Swift’s absence sparks curiosity as Chiefs opener and VMAs both pass her by

Taylor Swift‘s notable no-show at both an NFL season-opening game and the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards has stirred fresh intrigue around her priorities and public appearances.

The acclaimed singer, engaged to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, opted out of the Chiefs’ Week 1 showdown in São Paulo, Brazil, and declared she would not grace the VMAs stage or red carpet.

Though it was expected she might align appearances with Kelce‘s high-profile commitments, her absence has left fans puzzled and speculating.

At the season opener on September 5, the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil, but Taylor Swift was not in attendance.

Several reports cite logistical challenges, including tight timelines and security complexities, as key reasons for her missing the Chiefs game overseas.

Days after this news came out, the media confirmed that Swift will also forgo attending the 2025 MTV VMAs on Sunday, despite her nomination for Artist of the Year.

The award ended up going to Lady Gaga, who was in attendance despite having a show later that evening at Madison Square Garden.

Industry observers suggest that Swift has chosen to focus on preparations for her forthcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, set for release on October 3.

In a shift from previous years, this marks her first VMA absence since 2021, even as she vies for the same category she dominated last year.

A recalibrated public spotlight amid creative and athletic commitments

As her album rollout accelerates and Kelce‘s season gets under way, Swift appears to be choosing selective visibility over ubiquity.

The decision to skip both high-profile events comes amid efforts to carve out personal time after the whirlwind of her Eras Tour, completed in December 2024, and to manage fan and media expectations casting pressure on her public life.

This calculated absence invites questions about how the pop icon plans to balance her dual roles as artist and partner.

Fans, accustomed to her high-energy performances and frequent public appearances, are left to read between the lines.

Yet, Swift always manages to keep her presence felt, whether through surprise charitable visits or off-the-radar personal expression.

Meanwhile, Travis Kelce handled the social spotlight with characteristic professionalism.

His team opened the season with an international tilt, and while the outcome on the field was not ideal, the attention around his fiancée’s non-attendance only amplified interest in their next moves, both public and private.
