Taylor Swift makes music history (again): Two versions of the same song just hit 1 billion streams each

It’s been a whirlwind two weeks for 35-year-old Taylor Swift, and the music world still can’t stop talking. After her emotional announcement last Friday that she now officially owns all her masters, the pop titan has just shattered yet another record-this time on Spotify.

Leading with her signature track “Love Story,” Swift has become the first artist ever to have two solo versions of the same song each surpass one billion streams on the platform.

That’s right: both the 2008 original and “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” have now passed the billion-stream milestone, cementing her place as one of the most dominant forces in music history.

And she did it all without releasing a single new song in 2025.

Fans celebrated Tay Tay’s victory in a big way

The announcement of her full masters ownership came via a heartfelt Instagram post and an open letter to fans on her website:

“All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs… to me. All my music videos. All the closet films. The memories and photography. The unreleased songs. Every little bit… My entire life’s work.”

That emotional declaration ignited a Swiftie streaming surge, sending her back catalog soaring on both Spotify and iTunes. It also marks the culmination of a years-long battle that began when Swift’s original label, Big Machine, sold her first six albums’ masters to a third party-without her consent.

Fans were quick to celebrate the latest milestone. “Biggest hitmaker of all time!” one fan posted. Another chimed in, “Only Taylor could have 2 versions of the same song hit 1 billion streams.”

Swift is at the peak of popularity

The historic streaming feat comes just months after her Eras Tour wrapped up in December 2024, following a record-shattering 149 shows across nearly two years. Despite her relatively quiet start to 2025, Swift was spotted this week dining with Selena Gomez and later alongside boyfriend Travis Kelce.

While fans continue to beg for new music, she recently confirmed that her re-recording of her 2006 debut album “Taylor Swift” is finally complete-meaning the vault is likely about to reopen soon.

Until then, Swifties have one more reason to keep Love Story on repeat.
