Taulia Tagovailoa heads for Europe after signing with third team in 12 months

Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, is beginning a new phase in his football career overseas.

After being released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League, Taulia has signed with the Hamburg Sea Devils of the European League of Football (ELF), marking his third team since the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Although Tagovailoa built an impressive resume during his college years at the University of Maryland – becoming the all-time leading passer in Big Ten history with 11,256 yards – his transition into the professional ranks has been far from smooth.

Despite participating in rookie minicamps with both the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, he was not signed by either franchise. Eventually, he landed in the CFL with Hamilton, where he spent the majority of his time on the practice squad.

Over the course of eight games, he registered only one completed pass and 10 rushing yards, though he did manage to score a rushing touchdown. The Tiger-Cats ultimately released him, reportedly due to a mismatch with their offensive system.

A fresh start in Germany’s growing football scene

Now, Tagovailoa is embracing a new opportunity across the Atlantic. The Hamburg Sea Devils compete in the ELF, a league that has steadily grown since its inception in 2021. Designed to develop and showcase talent from around the world, the ELF has become an appealing destination for athletes looking to relaunch or extend their football careers.

For Tagovailoa, this move could be a pivotal one. It gives him a chance to take on a leadership role and prove he still has plenty to offer as a quarterback. Playing in Europe might not have been part of his original plan, but it presents a platform where he can continue to develop his skills in live competition.

Reactions from football fans have been mixed. Some have expressed encouragement, seeing this as a fresh start that could eventually lead him back to the NFL or another prominent league. Others have viewed his path as a cautionary tale about the difficult leap from college to professional football.

Still, Tagovailoa’s resolve to pursue his dream hasn’t wavered. Even when the odds seemed stacked against him, he has continued to chase opportunities wherever they arise. That persistence may now pay off in Hamburg, where he will have the chance to start anew and potentially redefine his career.

While the road hasn’t been easy, Taulia Tagovailoa’s willingness to adapt and keep going reflects a deeper commitment to the game-and that could be exactly what he needs to succeed on this latest leg of his journey.
