Tarik Skubal and Clay Holmes depart Team USA as roster changes announced

Team USA’s path through the World Baseball Classic has already delivered its share of drama on the field. Now, with the knockout stage approaching, the roster itself is undergoing a notable transformation.

After securing advancement to the tournament’s next round, Team USA made a series of pitching changes designed to keep the staff fresh while also accommodating players returning to their Major League clubs for spring training.

The reshuffling highlights one of the tournament’s ongoing challenges: balancing the urgency of international competition with the long-term priorities of MLB organizations.

Several pitchers who played a role earlier in the event will not continue with the team. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha, and veteran lefty Ryan Yarbrough have all been removed from the active roster as the United States prepares for the elimination stage.

Skubal, in particular, had been expected to make only a limited appearance in the event before returning to the Tigers‘ spring training camp.

Despite the brief stint, Skubal made a memorable impression. In his lone appearance, the reigning Cy Young winner delivered three strong innings against Great Britain, striking out five while allowing only a leadoff home run.

Another departure from the pitching staff involves New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes, who also stepped away from the roster as Team USA prepares for the knockout stage.

Holmes had been part of the American pitching group earlier in the tournament, even turning in a strong performance with three scoreless innings in pool play.

However, the right-hander ultimately returned to the Mets‘ spring training camp after it became clear he was unlikely to receive enough innings during the remainder of the tournament to stay on track with his regular-season preparation.

Bullpen reinforcements arrive as elimination stage looms

To compensate for the outgoing arms, Team USA has bolstered its bullpen with three experienced relievers: Will Vest, Tyler Rogers, and Tim Hill.

The additions reflect a strategic shift toward late-inning reliability as the tournament moves into a win-or-go-home format. Vest brings closing experience after recording 23 saves with a 3.20 ERA last season, while Rogers has built a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable relievers, posting a 1.98 ERA across 81 appearances. Hill, a veteran left-hander known for his ground-ball tendencies, adds another matchup option.

Manager Mark DeRosa and the coaching staff are expected to rely heavily on the bullpen during the next phase of the competition. With potential games stacking up quickly, depth and versatility on the mound become increasingly valuable.

Further changes could still be on the horizon. Veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to depart the roster after the quarterfinal matchup with Canada if the United States advances, with Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan expected to step in as a potential replacement for the later rounds.
