Swiatek on ‘Battle of the Sexes’: “Women’s tennis doesn’t need this”

Iga Swiatek, the last Wimbledon champion, was clear when asked if she witnessed the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ between Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios on December 28. In the press conference prior to the United Cup, the world number two said that “I haven’t seen it, because I don’t watch that kind of thing.”

The Polish tennis player said that “it certainly attracted a lot of attention. It was entertainment, but I wouldn’t say it had anything to do with social change or any important issue. The name was the same as Billie Jean King’s match in 1973. That’s all. There were no other similarities because I feel that women’s tennis right now stands on its own.”

In that sense, Swiatek stressed that “we have so many great athletes and stories to present, that we don’t necessarily need to compare ourselves to men’s tennis. There doesn’t need to be any competition. Events like the United Cup bring tennis together and WTA and ATP fans can watch this event with great enthusiasm.”

The Pole insisted that “to see also individual players who normally do not have space to play mixed doubles together is really what makes our sport much more interesting and better.”
