So much talent, so many elite players, the NFL is packed with stars determined to do whatever it takes to capture the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. As the new season approaches, the competition is fiercer than ever, and every team understands there’s little room for error. Only the most disciplined and focused players will be able to lead their teams to glory.

Players like Patrick Mahomes, Myles Garrett, Saquon Barkley, and Josh Allen are constant fixtures in the MVP conversation-established stars who have already proven their elite talent on the field. However, a new wave of dark horse candidates is emerging, four players poised to challenge the league’s biggest names for the coveted MVP title.

The dark horse MVP contenders to watch in 2025

They may not be the early-season favorites, but according to FanSided, a few unexpected names could disrupt the dominance of the league’s biggest stars. In a recent article, Romell Williams highlighted four players, each from different positions, whose unique storylines and rising momentum make them intriguing dark horse candidates in the 2025 MVP race.

In fourth place is Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who delivered a strong 2024 season with 3,870 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, just 3 interceptions, and a 64.8 QBR. Regarded as one of the league’s most promising young talents, Herbert will look to build on last season’s playoff run, which ended with a loss to the Houston Texans.

Ranked third on the list,Ja’Marr Chase has firmly established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL. Last season, he led the league with 127 receptions, 1,708 receiving yards. As he heads into the new season, Chase will look to continue leading the Cincinnati Bengals’ offense, relying on his precise route-running, explosive yards after the catch, and exceptional body control to stay in the MVP conversation.

Second on the list is Justin Jefferson, from Minnesota Vikings, who bounced back impressively in 2024 after an injury-riddled 2023 campaign. Despite past setbacks, Jefferson returned to form with a strong connection to quarterback Sam Darnold, producing standout numbers throughout the season. He finished with 103 receptions, 1,533 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns-firmly reestablishing himself as one of the league’s elite wide receivers.

The most promising under-the-radar MVP contender

It’s no secret that Baker Mayfield is one of the league’s most talented quarterbacks, and according to FanSided, he stands out as the most promising breakout MVP candidate for the 2025 NFL season.

Baker Mayfield posted a stellar 2024 season with 4,500 passing yards (3rd in the NFL), 41 touchdowns, and a 71.4% completion rate. Despite 16 interceptions, his efficiency stood out. His chemistry with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin powered the Buccaneers’ offense. Tampa Bay now looks to build on that momentum in 2025.

Everything is set for the start of the new season, where the league’s biggest stars will battle for the MVP award. But they shouldn’t get too comfortable, several under-the-radar players are poised to surprise and possibly outshine the favorites with breakout performances.
