The Super Bowl champions’ rings are one of the most coveted prizes in the history of American sports, awarded to the NFL champions, and serve as a commemorative object for players and team members to keep as a symbol of their triumph.

However, there is a curious detail that very few people know, and that is that rings are also given to the losing team of the Super Bowl. Obviously, this ring is less luxurious than the winner’s.

How did the ring tradition start at the Super Bowl?

The beginning of the rings to the champions of a professional sports league began in baseball, when in 1922 the New York Giants won the World Series against the Yankees, their rivals in the city.

The Giants players opted for rings instead of traditional awards such as lapel pins and engraved pocket watches.

The first Super Bowl rings were awarded to the Green Bay Packers, winners of Super Bowl I in 1967, and were designed by coach Vince Lombardi along with Jostens, the company that makes the rings, and each ring included a single diamond.

What are the manufacturing materials?

Rings are usually made of yellow or rose gold with diamonds, and generally include the team’s name and logo and the phrase “World Champions”

Super Bowl rings include diamonds in the shape of the Vince Lombardi Trophy or a football; it is also personalized with the player’s name and number

The NFL requires the Super Bowl logo to be in the design of the rings. They are usually made of yellow or rose gold, although the 2010 Packers opted for platinum.

How much does an NFL championship ring cost?

The price of each Super Bowl ring varies between $30,000 and $50,000. For example, the New England Patriots Super Bowl XLIX rings cost $36,500 each. A full set of rings for an entire team can exceed $5 million.

The NFL contributes $5,000 for the first 150 Super Bowl rings, and the team covers the cost of the additional ones. The Chiefs players paid $11,000 for their 2023 Super Bowl rings, deducted from their salaries, while receiving a $157,000 bonus for the title they won.

Resale costs

In 2012, Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl XXV ring, the New York Giants linebacker, sold at auction for $230,401 dollars, the record for a player ring.

The overall record is held by Robert Kraft’s Super Bowl LI ring, owner of the New England Patriots, which sold for more than $1 million in 2020.

The Super Bowl LI ring won by the Patriots, with the name “Brady”, sold for $344,927 in 2018, although it did not belong to quarterback Tom Brady, but was a version for family and friends.

It is no secret that the leader of this list is Tom Brady with seven. He is followed by Cowboys and 49ers defensive player Charles Haley with five, followed by an extensive list of four, including players such as Rob Gronkowski (Patriots), as well as the players who made the Steelers a dynasty in the 1970s such as Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris.

What team has the most rings in Super Bowl history?

The New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers are tied for the most Super Bowl wins, each with six championships.

Who are the players with most SB Rings in NFL history?

Brady stands clear of anyone else with seven Super Bowl wins in a dominant partnership with Bill Belichick that yielded six of them.
