Sue Bird believes the media is exaggerating the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese: “This is not new”

WNBA legend Sue Bird has spoken out against the media’s portrayal of a rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, emphasizing that such narratives are not new and have been present in women’s basketball for years.

Bird, a 13-time WNBA All-Star and four-time champion, expressed her concerns about how the media has sensationalized the interactions between Clark and Reese.

She pointed out that similar narratives have been constructed in the past, often focusing on trivial aspects rather than the athletes’ skills and achievements. Bird‘s comments highlight a recurring pattern where media outlets amplify minor incidents to create storylines that may not accurately reflect the athletes’ relationships.

“This is not new,” Bird remarked, referencing the longstanding tendency of the media to fabricate rivalries where none exist. She emphasized that such narratives detract from the players’ actual performances and contributions to the sport.

Clark and Reese’s perspective

Both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have downplayed the notion of a personal rivalry. Clark has stated that she doesn’t understand the concept of a rivalry between them, as they play different positions and have not directly competed against each other in that manner.

She acknowledged their competitive encounters but clarified that there is no animosity between them.

Reese has also addressed the media’s portrayal of their relationship, suggesting that she has been cast in the role of the “villain” to generate interest in women’s basketball. She expressed a willingness to embrace this characterization if it helps elevate the sport but emphasized that it doesn’t reflect the true nature of her interactions with Clark.

The role of the media

The media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of athletes and their relationships. In the case of Clark and Reese, the media’s focus on their interactions has contributed to the narrative of a rivalry.

However, as Bird and the players themselves have pointed out, this narrative may be more about creating a compelling story than reflecting the reality of their relationship.

It’s important for media outlets to consider the impact of their reporting on athletes’ reputations and the public’s understanding of their relationships. Sensationalizing interactions without context can lead to misunderstandings and unfair portrayals of individuals.
