Steve Kerr announces reward for Kuminga who is ready to return for the Warriors

Jonathan Kuminga has been healthy but has watched the last three games from the bench as Steve Kerr reworked his rotation.

In a season already filled with trade whispers and contract-related scrutiny, the move immediately raised questions about where Kuminga fits in Golden State‘s plans.

Contract context fuels rotation questions

Those questions were amplified by context. Kuminga‘s offseason was anything but quiet. Negotiations dragged on before he and the Golden State Warriors finally agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million extension.

While the deal brought financial security, the team option in the second year ensured that every rotation decision would be dissected, especially when minutes suddenly disappeared.

When Kerr spoke to reporters Wednesday, he reframed the situation. This was not a punishment or a demotion, but an evaluation of response and professionalism.

“You definitely want to see how guys respond in practice,” Kerr said. “And I can tell you, JK has been great this last week as he’s been out of the rotation. He’s working really hard, and I’m going to reward that.”

Kerr signals a return after practice response

Kerr confirmed that Kuminga is expected to be back in the rotation Thursday against the Phoenix Suns.

The details remain unclear. Kerr did not say whether Kuminga would start or come off the bench, nor did he outline how many minutes he plans to give him. Still, the message was unmistakable. The door is open again.

On the court, Kuminga‘s production has been solid but uneven. He has appeared in 17 games this season, starting 13 of them, and is averaging 12.4 points on 43.8% shooting. He is also contributing 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in roughly 25 minutes per game.

The numbers reflect a player who can help, but one still searching for consistency within a competitive NBA rotation.

What mattered most to Kerr, however, happened away from game nights. Practices. Effort. Attitude. Those elements often decide trust in Golden State‘s system, especially for younger players trying to establish themselves.

For Kuminga, this stretch could shape more than just the next game or two. With the Warriors balancing present ambitions and future flexibility, every opportunity carries added weight.
