Steve Kerr accuses the government of lying after ICE shot Renee Nicole Good: It’s shameful

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr did not mince words Friday night, sharply criticizing the federal government’s response to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an officer with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis.

Speaking at Chase Center ahead of Golden State’s game, Kerr addressed the issue unprompted during his pregame press conference. He began by acknowledging the Minnesota Timberwolves for publicly honoring Good, whose death has sparked outrage and grief.

“Well, I’m glad that the Timberwolves recognized her life and the tragic nature of her death,” Kerr said.

“It’s shameful, really, that in our country, we can have law enforcement officers who commit murder and seemingly get away with it,” Kerr told reporters. “It’s shameful that the government can come out and lie about what happened when there’s video and witnesses who have all come out and disputed what the government is saying.”

His frustration was unmistakable. Kerr paused briefly, then continued, framing the situation not just as a political issue but as a deeply human one.

“So, very demoralizing,” he said. “Devastating to lose anyone’s life, especially in that manner. So, it’s terrible. Terribly sad for her family, for her, and for that city. And I’m glad the Timberwolves came out and expressed that sadness.”

A familiar stance from one of sports’ most vocal coaches

Kerr‘s comments were consistent with a long pattern. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the most outspoken figures in professional sports on social and political issues, frequently using his platform to address matters he believes extend far beyond basketball.

That willingness has been especially visible during the presidential eras of Donald Trump, when Kerr repeatedly weighed in on topics such as gun violence, racial injustice, and government transparency. Friday night’s remarks fit squarely within that tradition, reinforcing his belief that remaining silent in moments like these carries its own consequences.

The killing of Renee Nicole Good has drawn scrutiny because of conflicting accounts between federal officials and witness testimony, with video evidence reportedly challenging the government’s version of events.

While investigations remain ongoing, the case has intensified debate around law enforcement oversight and public trust.
