The Cowboys aren’t complete yet, there still seems to be some things on the to-do-list. Certainly, the Micah Parsons drama is one that needs to be solved ASAP or things may turn the wrong way. There are also some holes that can be filled before training camp, enter Stephon Gilmore. An old firend of Jerry World is still out there, and it may seem like partnering again could happen sooner rather than later.
Stephon Gilmore, the former Dallas Cowboys standout and NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is ‘practically begging’ to return to Dallas, sparking speculation in a podcast as the 2025 training camp approaches.
Stephon Gilmore seek the spotlight and the Cowboys are it
Gilmore, now 34, remains a free agent determined to continue his NFL career, as long as the fit is right. In a recent appearance on the ‘Money Down Podcast’, he emphasized his desire to play ‘this year’. The formar New England Patriot insisted that he’s not desperate, but strategically seeking a team where he can still contribute meaningly. Familiarity and proven performance are two factors that play in his favor, given the 2023 season with the team, where he delivered a solid performance across 17 starts.
WIth injuries and inconsistency plaguing the star-studded Cowboys secondary, bringing in a veteran like Gilmore on a team-friendly deal could stabilize the defensive backfield. Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland are proven blue-chip players, but the injury bug has bite them on multiple occasions. They also brought forme first-round pick Kaiir Elam over from Buffalo, hoping that a new home may spark the potential of the still young cornerback. A Super Bowl champions and one of the league’s premier cornerbacks from the late 2010s, Gilmore offers leadership and playoff experience the younger defenders can lean on.
Is a Cowboys-Gilmore reunion in the cards?
The credentials that the former Buffalo Bill presents are plenty, a resume that is difficult to find today in the NFL. Drafterd 10th overall in 2012 out of South Carolina, won the Defensive Player of the Year as a Patriot in 2019, went to five Pro Bowls (2016, 2018-21) and was names first-team All-Pro twice (2018 & ’19). Since then, he’s had stints with the Panthers, Colts, Cowboys, and Vikings.
With NFL training camps set to open in late July 2025, Gilmore’s situation is gaining traction. Fansiders suggest that if Dallas is serious about bolstering its secondary depth chart, Gilmore presents a smart, low-risk, investment, If the former All-Pro cornerback remains intent on playing, and the Cowboys want added veteran experience, a reunion could me a smart move, especially given his willingness to sign a cap-friendly deal.
