Stephen and Dell Curry surpass the NBA record of Kobe and Joe Bryant and now go hunt LeBron and Bronny James

The Curry family has just accomplished another milestone that will go directly to the NBA record books. This past Sunday, January 11, 2026, Stephen Curry and his father, Dell Curry, officially surpassed the legendary duo of Kobe and Joe “Jellybean” Bryant to become the second-highest scoring father-son duo in league history.

However, there is still a greater challenge ahead: to take over the first place, occupied by the one and only LeBron James and his son Bronny. One of the toughest challenges ever.

This achievement represents way more than just a statistical anomaly, it serves as a testament of how the family business of elite players has spanned over four decades of professional basketball.

Surpassing the Bryants

The Currys passed the Bryants by a very thin margin still. With a signature flurry of three-pointers against the Atlanta Hawks, Steph pushed the family total to 38,896 points, inching past the 38,895 held by Joe and Kobe Bryant.

While it is true that Kobe Bryant contributed the most of his duo’s total (33,643 points), the Curry total is a more balanced reflection of two generations of great shooters. Dell Curry was one of the most important players of the 1990s era, while Steph has completely changed and revolutionized the game as the greatest shooter to ever live.

Here are the top 5 father-son duos with their combined points:

  • LeBron James (42,601) Bronny (91) = 42,692
  • Dell Curry (12,670) Stephen (26,226) = 38,896
  • Joe Bryant (5,202) Kobe (33,643) 38,895
  • Mychal Thompson (12,810) Klay (16,940) = 29,750
  • Dolph Schayes (18,438) Danny (8,780) = 27,218

Hunting the James family

With the Bryants left behind, the Currys now set their aim on the next challenge: LeBron and Bronny James. As seen, this duo currently holds a substantial lead with 42,692 combined points. However, the nature of this hunt is unique.

LeBron James continues to add to his all-time scoring record at a historic pace. Meanwhile, Bronny James is beginning his professional journey and is finding path as a rotational piece for the Lakers, contributing a little bit to the family total.

In order to catch the James family, the Currys need to bridge a gap of roughly 3,796 points. Steph’s current scoring average of 28.8 points per game, he would need approximately 132 games to close that distance assuming LeBron James stopped scoring today. Since LeBron shows no signs of slowing down, this chase could continue forever.

Speaking after the record-breaking win against Utah earlier this month, Steph reflected on the humane side of the journey.

“It’s cool. Just longevity and the family business being in this game. Knowing that [Dell] played for 16 years, and I’m in my 17th year still trying to do it… It’s a dream come true.”

Stephen Curry

The Curry vs. James scoring race will serve as a living tribute to the evolution of the NBA. We are witnessing an era where the children of legends are finding their own way. Whether the Currys eventually catch the James family we do not know, but their ascent past the Bryants solidifies their place at the top NBA family.
