What do you give the man who has everything? Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ birthday was this October 13th, and his friends and family surely struggled to decide what to give him. For his part, Stephen A. Smith found a gift very much in his style, although it might not be entirely to the taste of the demanding Jones.
Jones’s 83rd birthday wasn’t quite what he expected. His team hasn’t quite found its rhythm and on Sunday suffered its third loss in six games, losing 30-27 to the Carolina Panthers.
To add insult to injury, former running back Rico Dowdle, who left the Cowboys in free agency, had one of the best games of his career, rushing for 183 yards on 30 carries.
True to form, Smith rubbed salt in the wound with a sarcastic birthday greeting. The message is sure to hit Jones’s ego, especially if his team doesn’t improve in the coming weeks.
SAS’s “congratulations” to Jerry Jones
On the latest episode of ESPN’s First Take, the renowned sportscaster, also known as SAS, went after Jones. His first criticism? Dallas’ shaky defense.
“Jerry was hoping that Dak Prescott and the offense were going to be so prolific that they would win games scoring 30+, and that would offset what they weren’t defensively,” Smith said bluntly.
He immediately reminded him of the mistakes he made in the last free agency period. “He should have kept Micah. You still have Pickens and CeeDee Lamb. You should have kept Rico Dowdle for the extra $3 million, because he went to Carolina on a one-year $6 million deal.”
As “his Libra buddy,” SAS rubbed in Jones’ face that by not shelling out $3 million, he lost Dowdle and a vital game for the Cowboys. “This is not a good birthday for Jerry Jones. But happy birthday anyway.”
Jones’s suspicious silence
Jones isn’t one to stay quiet. The outspoken Cowboys owner is usually the voice of the team after games, regardless of the outcome, but not this time.
Despite the painful setback against the Panthers, Jones has avoided the press, and not even Smith’s sarcastic message has managed to bring him into the spotlight.
As pressure mounts for the team and head coach Brian Schottenheimer, fans are eager to see when and how Jones will respond to the loss and SAS’s birthday message.
