A second straight win left the Indiana Fever hanging on to the last spot in the WNBA standings in playoff contention.
DeWanna Bonner’s Phoenix Mercury managed to beat Stephanie White’s team 85-79 at home, at the PHX Arena. And the Fever coach spoke about the situation, along with stars Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell.
Indiana’s words
With only three games remaining, Fever currently owns a 21-20 record, and they plan to improve their numbers heading into their next matchup against Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky.
As White detailed, they are “still in control” of what they “can control,” and that is the game they are scheduled to play Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse:
“We still control our destiny, and we still have to make sure that we are playing the game that’s in front of us… We got to be solely focused on our next opponent. Get some rest tomorrow, come back and get some work in on Thursday, and get ready for Chicago,” the 48-year-old coach told the press after the loss to Phoenix.
The players who accompanied her and offered their words to reporters were Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell, the team’s leading scorers against the Mercury.
During the game, Hull contributed 18 points, one assist and five rebounds in 35 minutes, but Mitchell also stood out with 29 points, four assists and four rebounds in 36 minutes of action.
Although their efforts could not stop their rivals, after the loss they shared their coach’s vision and made clear their next goal:
“Focus on the one on Friday,” Lexie simply said, while Kelsey added: “All we can do is control what we can control, and that’s Friday. Lord willing, we prepare the right way, we show up as a group leading up to Friday,” she began and continued, “I believe in our group. I believe in every person in our locker room. I believe in our coaching staff, and I think that Friday is the most important for us“.
Fortunately for Indiana, all four times they have faced Chicago, they have come out on top. However, a loss could be a tough blow.
After facing the Sky, they will face the Washington Mystics at CFG Bank Arena Baltimore, and finally the Minnesota Lynx at home on Tuesday the 9th.
