Steph Curry has an ‘enemy’ at home who takes away the support of his mother Sonya in some games

Few NBA families have captured public interest quite like the Currys with both Stephen and Seth playing in the league, and mother being a prominent personality within the sport. But one question remains: Who does Sonya support when her sons do battle?

Parents often say they don’t have a favorite but not all families have their dynamics play out under the national spotlight and so, in this unusual basketball household, support isn’t always evenly distributed.

In fact, during head-to-head matchups, Sonya admits that her loyalties shift and not in the direction many would expect as she reveals Steph and the Golden State Warriors don’t always have her backing.

Whilst Steph, as a four-time champion, boasts talent beyond question, the man widely regarded as the greatest shooter in league history finds himself without the full unconditional love of his mother against Seth.

“I kind of root for Seth,” Sonya once revealed to The Today Show. “Because I’m like, ‘Get him! I want you to get your older brother.’

“Because I’m a fan of just sports in general, I go in to have a good time. Mommy mode kicks in at different moments. Motherly instincts will never go away.

“Every time I see them now as adults and they play against each other, it takes me back to them in the house and in the backyard.”

Growing up, Seth frequently found himself trying to outdo his older brother in backyard contests, and that sibling rivalry has carried over into the professional ranks in the NBA.

Though the younger Curry sibling has not matched his older brother’s achievements, he has carved out a respected NBA career, known particularly for his three-point accuracy.

In fact, Seth led the NBA in three-point shooting percentage during the 2024/25 season, finishing at 45.6%. It’s a feat that still eludes his elder brother despite his renowned ability from range.

Steph Curry’s thoughts as Jonathan Kuminga issues Warriors snub

Steph’s own team situation has grown more uncertain as following a disappointing playoff exit in which he missed the final four games of the Western Conference semifinals, the Golden State Warriors face roster questions heading into the 2025/26 NBA season.

Most notably, forward Jonathan Kuminga has rejected a new contract proposal from the team. The young talent, a restricted free agent, has reportedly declined to waive a no-trade clause embedded in the offer.

It’s a sticking point that signals growing tension between the player and front office ahead of what could be a serious push for the NBA championship.

“I think we need to just let this guy play basketball,” Steph said in April. “We don’t have to have a declaration after every game.”

Curry’s comment was made in defense of Kuminga amid media scrutiny and it now takes on added weight as the 22-year-old explores potential roles with the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings.
