Steph Curry goes back to Davidson as the best shooter in NBA history gets honored

Stephen Curry‘s return to Davidson on Tuesday night carried more meaning than a typical alumni appearance.

While the Wildcats opened Atlantic 10 play in a hard-fought 89-83 double-overtime loss to Duquesne at a sold-out Belk Arena, the evening centered on honoring the most influential athlete in the school’s history with a lasting tribute that now greets drivers entering campus.

Curry was in attendance alongside Golden State Warriors teammates Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler as Davidson officially recognized the naming of Interstate 77’s Exit 30 as the Stephen Curry Interchange. The designation was approved unanimously by the North Carolina Board of Transportation following a resolution passed by the town council, cementing Curry’s legacy not only at the college but within the broader Davidson community.

The reason behind the latest Curry honor

The resolution cited Curry‘s achievements on the court and his extensive humanitarian efforts. While he is best known as a four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP and the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers, local leaders emphasized the impact he has made away from basketball.

Steph has funded an endowment to expand Davidson‘s women’s athletic programs, renovated facilities at the Ada Jenkins Center where he volunteered as a student, and supported opportunities for Black golfers by funding Howard University’s golf teams.

Curry and his wife Ayesha also co-founded the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation in 2019, which focuses on combating poverty through access to books, meals and safe play spaces for children. The foundation’s work in underserved communities, along with Curry’s advocacy for global causes such as malaria prevention through Nothing But Nets, played a significant role in the decision to honor him in this way.

Curry has shaped Davidson’s identity

Former Davidson president Tom Ross, who nominated Curry for the interchange recognition, said the honor reflects how deeply Steph has shaped the college’s identity. Ross noted that Curry brought national attention to Davidson during his playing days and continues to represent the school and town with distinction long after leaving campus.

The symbolic details of the honor were not lost on those in attendance. Exit 30 mirrors the jersey number Curry has worn throughout his career, a number also associated with his family. His father Dell Curry, a former NBA standout and longtime Charlotte Hornets broadcaster, wore No. 30, as does his brother Seth Curry, currently with the Warriors.

Stephen Curry‘s mother Sonya expressed pride and gratitude during the ceremony, calling the recognition a meaningful reflection of the family’s bond with Davidson.
