Steelers reward Omar Khan’s bold strategy with multi-year extension

Omar Khan’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed-and now it’s being rewarded.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Thursday that their general manager has signed a three-year extension, keeping him with the organization through the 2028 season. It’s a move that reinforces the franchise’s faith in Khan’s leadership after a stretch marked by bold trades, headline-making signings, and a clear push toward championship contention.

Khan, 48, took over as GM in 2022 following Kevin Colbert’s retirement and has quickly carved out his own identity. Under his leadership, Pittsburgh has gone 29-22 and made the playoffs twice, though both runs ended in early exits. Still, there’s little doubt about the team’s trajectory.

Khan’s All-In Approach Signals a New Era in Pittsburgh

This offseason may have been Khan’s most aggressive yet. He brought in quarterback Aaron Rodgers, traded for star wide receiver DK Metcalf and All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and signed veteran cornerback Darius Slay. The message? The Steelers aren’t just trying to compete-they’re trying to win it all.

“I believe we are building a championship roster,”Khan said in a team statement. “Our goals remain the same: to bring another Super Bowl to Pittsburgh and to our incredible fans.”

The franchise has also stocked up for the future, owning 12 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft-set to take place in Pittsburgh. That kind of draft capital, paired with Khan’s proven eye for talent, gives the Steelers flexibility to keep evolving.

Team president Art Rooney II praised Khan’s work in a statement, noting his ability to build “through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency.” That calculated balance seems to be paying off.

Khan’s new deal lines up closely with head coach Mike Tomlin’s contract, which runs through 2027. With two of the team’s top leaders secured long-term, Pittsburgh is betting on continuity-and on the vision Khan has been building since day one.
