Steelers GM breaks silence on George Pickens trade: “It just made sense”

When George Pickens lit up the league in 2023, few imagined his time in Pittsburgh would end this abruptly-or this quietly. The second-round pick had all the makings of a long-term WR1: size, explosiveness, and the kind of sideline catches that make highlight reels for weeks.

But as the Steelers reshaped their roster heading into 2025, they quietly shipped Pickens to Dallas in a deal that raised more eyebrows than excitement-netting only a 2026 third-rounder and a minor value swap.

Turns out, this wasn’t just about stats. “We felt it was time for a fresh start,” said Steelers GM Omar Khan on The Rich Eisen Show.“It made sense for both of us.”

He didn’t elaborate much, but reading between the lines, it’s clear: this move had less to do with on-field production and more to do with off-field friction.

Sometimes Talent Isn’t Enough in the NFL

Pickens posted nearly 2,900 receiving yards in three seasons, and from the outside, his trajectory looked promising. But according to reports from NFL insiders like Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Pickens’ relationship with the coaching staff had become rocky. There were questions about his maturity, consistency in practice, and willingness to buy into the system.

And in a franchise known for its culture and discipline, those kinds of issues don’t go unnoticed for long.

The Steelers, clearly eager to move forward, filled the gap fast. In came D.K. Metcalf, whose physical presence and playoff experience give the offense a new identity. He’s not just a replacement-he’s a statement.

Meanwhile, the defense isn’t taking a back seat. The trade for Jalen Ramsey and the record-setting extension for T.J. Watt signal an all-in mentality from Pittsburgh, even if it meant parting ways with a rising star like Pickens.

“It was important for us that T.J. be a one-helmet Hall of Famer,”Khan told Eisen. “Hopefully, there’s many more years to go.”

The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2017. That drought is long enough to make big changes feel necessary. Whether this gamble pays off will depend not just on the production of Metcalf or Ramsey, but on whether Pittsburgh’s leadership can reestablish the chemistry that once defined the franchise.

Pickens, now with the Cowboys, will have every chance to prove he was worth more. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is betting that subtraction leads to addition.
