Steelers give Aaron Rodgers time but a specific deadline could be nearing for decision

With free agency and the NFL Draft out of the way, there’s one big domino left to fall in terms of high-profile players that are still available. Aaron Rodgers, who was released by the New York Jets right before free agency, is yet to sign with another team. Despite links to certain teams, nothing has materialized.

Rodgers’ patience has led to two of the three main options – the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants – for the 41-year-old vanishing. It’s basically down to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Rodgers. The franchise telegraphed its intentions by not addressing the starting quarterback position seriously through either free agency or the draft. Mason Rudolph and Will Howard don’t exactly inspire confidence, meaning Mike Tomlin and co. would welcome Rodgers with open arms.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II provides update on Aaron Rodgers’ status

The ball appears to be in Rodgers’ court. Steelers owner Art Rooney II‘s comments from Thursday support that sentiment.

The Steelers are playing it patiently, as is Rodgers. While it seems to be a waiting game, the deadline for the quarterback’s decision could very well be June 10. That’s when mandatory minicamp begins. Rodgers’ biographer, Ian O’Connor, said this week that he believes Rodgers will be a member of an organization by that point.

I do think there will be a happy ending, at least for him, and we will find out for the Steelers and their fan base. If I had $100 to put down, my feeling is he will be in uniform June 10th for the start of the mandatory minicamp.

With only one real option left, Rodgers will be a member of the Steelers if he truly wants to continue his football career.
