As the Kansas City Chiefs started training camp this week, the team is also making major moves off of it. Accordingg to a recent report by NBC Sports, the Chiefs are actively negotiating with both Missouri and Kansas over potential stadium deals.

This development comes just months after a failed sales tax entension proposal in Jackson County, Missouri, which has reopened questions about the franchise’s long-term home. With serious discussions now underway, both states are offering their bestt pitch to keep, or attract, the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Missouri’s mission to keep the Chiefs in Kansas City

The Chiefs’ current lease at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium expires in 2031, but team officials are not waiting until the last minute to secure their future. Missouri lawmakers and local officials are working hard to present a revised plan to retain the franchise. After the controversial April ballot measure was voted down, largely due to concerns about public funding and lack of transparency, state lenders are now under pressure to present a more voter-friendly proposal.

Sources indicate that Missouri’s new efforts may include increased private investments from the Chiefs, as well as more community engagement to help garner public support. The team has emphasized its historic connection to Kansas City and the importance of staying close to its roots. However, sentiment alone may not be enough to outweigh more financially enticing options.

Kansas makes its move to lure the Chiefs

Meanwhile, Kansas has entered the conversation with competitive intent. According to NBC Sports, state officials are in “active negotiations” with the Chiefs, potentially offering public funding and infrastructure support to build a state-of-the-art stadium on their side of the state line. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and key lawmakers have expressed strong interest in bringing the Chiefs across the border, which would be a monumental shift in the region’s sports landscape.

The economic impact of hosting an NFL franchise is significant, and Kansas sees this as a once-in-a-generation opportunity. With the team’s growing global popularity and consistent on-field success, Kansas officials are eager to capitalize on the potential tourism and business development that would come with such a move.
