It’s time to chalk up another winning talking point for those who believe spectators are situated too close to the holes on golf courses. The Presidents Cup was host to a truly stunning moment on Saturday that has brought about plenty of discussion.
On the second hole, Corey Conners’ approach shot ended up going much more left than expected. With spectators only a few yards away from the green, the ball was set to take a bounce in front of them and potentially hit one of them.
Before that could happen, though, a spectator volleyed the ball like a soccer player and ended up redirecting the ball onto the green, very close to the hole.
Theoretically, that could have counted, and it would have been an incredibly lucky break for Conners. But because the kick by the spectator was considered a “deliberate action”, the rulebook stipulates that the shot was technically out of bounds.
According to PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek, “you estimate where the ball would’ve landed if it wasn’t deflected”. Conners and his partner, Nick Taylor, went on to lose that hole despite their opponents shooting a bogey.
