Neither Sophie Cunningham nor Kelsey Mitchell has a guaranteed future with the Indiana Fever. When the playoffs ended, so did their contracts, and both players became unrestricted free agents. That has left them in limbo, uncertain about what comes next in their careers.

Although the future remains unclear for both, the team’s social media recently drew attention after posting an image of Mitchell battling several Phoenix Mercury players for the ball. The caption accompanying the photo caught everyone’s eye:

Hardest player in the league to guard.

The moment didn’t go unnoticed by Mitchell’s teammate, Sophie Cunningham, who not only liked the post but also added a simple, emphatic comment:

Period.

That one-word reply may have carried a message meant for the Fever’s front office, a subtle push to settle the players’ contractual situations ahead of next season. Both Cunningham and Mitchell likely seek the stability of a new deal that allows them to enjoy the offseason without the uncertainty of where they’ll play next year.

As for Mitchell, she is known for her impressive speed and her ability to escape defensive pressure with ease. Her exceptional footwork and body control make her one of the toughest guards to defend in the entire league. That skill set has made her a cornerstone for Indiana, and losing her would be a major blow to the team’s offensive rhythm and chemistry.

What will happen with Sophie Cunningham and Kelsey Mitchell next season?

So far, there’s no clarity on what lies ahead for either player. Both have expressed a strong desire to remain in Indiana and continue contributing to a team that has been steadily improving. After years of rebuilding, the Fever finally reached the postseason again, and both Cunningham and Mitchell were key pieces in that resurgence. Their goal now is to take the next step, reaching the Finals and contending for a championship.

Cunningham has been vocal about her attachment to the franchise and her bond with her teammates. She’s repeatedly said she’s happy in Indiana and has little interest in exploring other offers, emphasizing how much she values the culture and chemistry the team has built.

Mitchell, meanwhile, is approaching her decision more cautiously. The dynamic guard has made it clear she wants to make the best choice not only for her career but also for her family. Still, her affection for the team and her role in its growth suggest that staying in Indiana remains her preferred option, if the organization steps up with the right offer.

At this point, the ball is firmly in the Fever’s court.
