Sophie Cunningham unveils her “new team” ahead of upcoming WNBA season

As WNBA free agency edges closer to its decisive window, Sophie Cunningham has added an unexpected twist to her offseason storyline. While her future with the Indiana Fever remains unresolved, the veteran guard has already secured a new role for the upcoming season just not on the court.

?

Cunningham announced via social media that she will join USA Network as part of its studio coverage for WNBA games, aligning herself with the network’s expanded broadcast plans under the league’s new media rights deal. The timing of the reveal, just days before teams can officially negotiate contracts, has only intensified speculation about where she will play next.

“I’m back baby and with a NEW SQUAAAAD!!” Cunningham wrote. “I’m joining the @usasports team throughout the year to contribute to studio coverage of @wnba games on @usanetwork.”

A calculated move as free agency heats up

Cunningham‘s announcement arrives at a critical juncture. As an unrestricted free agent, she is free to negotiate with any team once the window opens, with deals eligible to be signed shortly after. While both she and Indiana Fever have expressed mutual interest in continuing their partnership, no agreement has yet been reached.

Her move into broadcasting is not entirely new territory. Cunningham previously worked as a guest analyst during the NBA season while still an active player, showcasing a comfort in front of the camera that now appears to be evolving into a more permanent role.

Speaking recently about her interest in media, Cunningham explained her approach to the game extends beyond playing. “I know the game, I have the IQ for it,” she said. “I see plays, I see why they do different schemes.” That analytical perspective is expected to shape her contributions on the broadcast desk.

Despite the off-court developments, Cunningham‘s value as a player remains central to her free agency outlook. After arriving in Indiana Fever via trade, she quickly became an important piece of the team’s rotation, providing shooting, defensive intensity and vocal leadership.

She averaged 8.6 points per game while contributing across multiple categories, and her chemistry with Caitlin Clark added another layer to Indiana Fever‘s evolving identity. Her season, however, was cut short by a knee injury, leaving questions about both her health and her long-term role.

Decision looming as Indiana weighs its options

For the Indiana Fever, retaining Cunningham may not be straightforward. The franchise faces increasing salary cap pressure, with major financial commitments expected for cornerstone players. That reality could limit flexibility in negotiations, even if both sides are open to a reunion.

At the same time, Cunningham‘s skill set makes her an attractive option across the league. Teams looking for a versatile wing with playoff experience and strong locker room presence are likely to show interest once talks begin.

Cunningham‘s latest move reflects a broader shift in professional basketball, where players are expanding their influence beyond the court while still competing at a high level. Her role with USA Network positions her at the centre of the WNBA‘s growing media landscape, even as her playing future remains undecided.

For now, the focus shifts to the coming days, when negotiations will determine whether her next “team” includes a return to Indiana Fever or a fresh start elsewhere. Either way, Cunningham has already ensured she will remain a visible presence in the league, both on and off the court.
