After an intense and energetic year, Sophie Cunningham is taking advantage of the WNBA offseason to return to Columbia and host the fourth edition of her annual three-day basketball tournament, the Sophie Cunningham Classic.
Families and teams filled the event, held at Columbia College, with energy and vitality, something for which the 29-year-old point guard was grateful.
Sophie thanks her fans
Last year, Cunningham took a big leap after deciding to join the Indiana Fever roster after six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury. Alongside Caitlin Clark and her teammates, she won the Commissioner’s Cup and helped the team reach the WNBA playoff semifinals.
However, after tearing the medial collateral ligament in her right knee in August, she had to end her season.
Now, in the offseason and recovering from her injury, the WNBA star took the opportunity to enjoy the weekend, focus on her personal project, and get closer to her fans.
Sophie was approachable to people who wanted to take a picture with her, exchange a few words, or get her autograph.
Cunningham’s gesture did not go unnoticed after the X account, @RodKRCG13, shared a video saying, “Sophie is a friend to everyone! Long lines for autographs between games at the @sophaller Classic!”
The 29-year-old veteran quickly shared the video on her official account and dedicated a warm message of thanks for the support and affection she received: “I love my hometown and the people in it
After her post, fans reacted with comments such as:
“The state of Missouri is very lucky to have you,” said one. “Local legend, giving back to where it all started!! Thank you!!,” wrote another. “You’re a good soul, Sophie Cunningham!” commented a third follower.
On Friday and Saturday, eight games were played per day, while on Sunday, the event closed with five, the last of which was Liberty North vs. Rock Bridge.
The tournament, which has grown in popularity over the years, began in 2022 thanks to Sophie and her sister Lindsey and is sponsored by Adidas and Arby’s, brands with which the Fever star collaborates.
As a result, the Sophie Cunningham Classic has gained greater relevance among athletes, families, and major brands that support what is often one of the first opportunities for young athletes to compete.
